How to encrypt an Excel document

If you are looking to protect your information and you’re using Excel, this is a great place to start.

In less than 30 seconds, you can have your Excel document encrypted so that it only opens with a password. Follow these simple steps:

Save your workbook

Try to avoid using an obvious name like “Passwords” or “Login Info”. Name it something random, but remember you will have to find it when you need it so don’t make it too obscure.

Select “Protect Workbook”

After you have saved it, click on the “File” button. Under the “Info” section, click on “Protect Workbook” and then select “Encrypt with Password“.

Add your password

There is absolutely no way to recover an Excel workbook password so please be very, very careful with this option. You need to use a password you will remember for as long as you need access to this workbook.

Press “OK” and it will prompt you to re-enter your password. This is your last change to make sure you will remember this password!

Your document is secure!

Now every time you or anyone else tries to open this document, they will be prompted for a password.
